Morris County recently took part in the Third Annual Municipal Transportation Forum held by Avenues in Motion at the County College of Morris. The event was a convergence of local officials, law enforcement, transport professionals, and community members aimed at discussing strategies to improve infrastructure and road safety.
Deputy Director Stephen Shaw, also the Secretary of the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) Board of Trustees, was among the participants. Shaw emphasized, “This forum provides a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, connect with experts, and explore innovative solutions to the transportation challenges we face.” He underscored Morris County’s extensive transportation network, which includes 287 miles of roads, 1,000 bridges, and three freight railroads.
Highlighting the county’s investments in transportation, Shaw stated, “Morris County invests heavily in transportation infrastructure, with nearly half of our annual capital spending targeted towards maintaining and improving our roads and bridges.” He called for a collaborative approach involving counties, municipalities, and regional agencies to ensure an efficient transportation system.
The forum discussed Vision Zero and New Jersey’s Target Zero Commission, aiming to eliminate traffic fatalities through policy shifts and infrastructure enhancements. Key panelists included Robert Gaydosh, Paul Mickiewicz, and Jeff Perlman. Additional discussions focused on community safety strategies, featuring Warren County Assistant Planner Ryan Conklin and Piscataway Police Officer William Kloos.
Deputy Director Shaw announced NJTPA’s forthcoming funding opportunities, including the Local Mobility Initiatives Program, now also catering to micromobility projects, and the Planning for Emerging Centers Program. Both will be accessible on NJTPA.org.
Avenues in Motion President Dan Callas remarked, “We are incredibly encouraged by the collaboration and engagement that took place at this year’s forum.” The forum sponsors included local providers Boxcar and My Limo. The NJTPA remains committed to managing substantial transportation improvement projects across Northern New Jersey, impacting 13 counties and seven million residents.
