Morris County has launched an interactive online ArcGIS StoryMap to commemorate over three decades of land preservation, emphasizing the achievements of the Morris County Open Space Trust Fund. This initiative, developed by the Morris County Office of Planning and Preservation, showcases nearly 300 projects that have received support since the fund’s establishment by voter referendum in 1992. The StoryMap features interactive maps, photographs, and data, illustrating the extent of preserved lands.
Joe Barilla, director of the Office of Planning and Preservation, remarked, “Morris County has long recognized the value of preserving our natural resources and open spaces, and this StoryMap highlights the incredible success we’ve had in doing that.”
Since the inception of the Open Space Trust Fund in 1994, it has been instrumental in preserving over 14,750 acres, contributing to Morris County’s total preservation of about 18,300 acres. The StoryMap also highlights milestones like the first preservation projects in Jefferson, Mount Olive, and Denville.
The resource offers maps showing preserved spaces by municipality and region, and provides examples of recreation areas, trails, wetlands, and other protected sites. Commissioner Deputy Director Stephen H. Shaw stated, “This is more than just a history lesson; it’s a celebration of the partnerships and people who have made Morris County one of the most desirable places to live, work and play in New Jersey.”
Twelve non-profits and 37 of the county’s 39 municipalities have contributed to the program, utilizing both public and private resources. Additionally, the StoryMap presents the 15-member Open Space Trust Fund Review Board, which evaluates annual grant applications. The 2025 grant cycle applications are now available, with a submission deadline on June 19, 2025.
The StoryMap is part of the larger Morris County Preservation Trust Fund, which also supports various preservation and conservation projects. More information can be accessed at morriscountynj.gov/OpenSpace.
