The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have made available updated draft flood risk data for Morris County. This release provides residents and local officials with an initial look at new flood hazard information.

The draft flood data can be accessed through an online viewer. Although the viewer does not offer a public comment feature, it allows users to examine updated flood risk details in advance of the preliminary maps, which are anticipated in spring 2025.

This initiative is part of the ongoing Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) project and incorporates the latest engineering analysis on water flow and accumulation during floods. FEMA and NJDEP assert that these updates are essential for developing precise flood maps, aiding communities in making informed decisions to safeguard lives and property.

Municipalities will have further opportunities to provide feedback before federal and state authorities finalize the maps. Input from both the public and local officials is vital to ensure map accuracy.

FEMA and NJDEP emphasize the significance of accurate, up-to-date flood risk data in assisting communities to prepare for and mitigate flooding events. Both agencies urge residents and local leaders to review the draft data and participate actively in enhancing flood awareness and resilience.

Residents with questions should contact FEMA, NJDEP, or their municipal offices. For additional information, visit FEMA’s Geoplatform or reach out to NJDEP at 877-927-6337 or FEMA Region 2 Office at 212-680-3600.
