Public Service Announcement Reminder

The Morris County Sheriff’s Office has received five (5) reports of attempted fraud and false representation via phone. The time frame recently is from September to October. The incidents have individuals identifying themselves as “Sgt. Smith” and “Sgt. Joe Caruso” with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office. There was separate case where the caller stated they were with Morris Plains as well. These callers attempted to request payment from $500.00 dollars to $7,500.00, based off old warrants, bail payment, and missing jury duty.
The victims of these attempted crimes called the Morris County Sheriff’s Office to verify, and all were advised the Morris County Sheriff's Office does not collect money for missing jury duty, request of anyone that they reach out to family members requesting payment for bail, or for payment of outstanding warrants. Remember, never provide sensitive personal information, money, or access to your assets to any unknown individual.
If you have any questions about this reminder or need further guidance on these matters, please contact the Morris County Sheriff's Office at 973-285-6600. Thank you.
