The Morris County Board of County Commissioners has designated Saturday, November 30, 2024, as Small Business Saturday. This initiative is part of a national movement started by American Express in 2010 to encourage holiday shoppers to support local businesses. Commissioner Director Christine Myers emphasized the importance of small businesses in Morris County, stating, "In Morris County, small businesses are vital to our communities, serving as the backbone of our local economies."
The county has supported its small businesses through a grant program that provided nearly $11 million in aid in 2022 and continues to invest in marketing campaigns aimed at attracting visitors to local shopping areas. Nationwide, small businesses represent 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and employ nearly 59 million people.
Commissioner Tayfun Selen highlighted the role of organizations like the Morris County Economic Development Alliance and others in supporting local business growth. This year, the alliance has partnered with American Express for Small Business Saturday to further encourage residents to Shop Small.
Meghan Hunscher, President and CEO of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, expressed pride in supporting Small Business Saturday: "We’re proud to support Small Business Saturday and celebrate the many small businesses that give Morris County its unique charm." She also invited residents to use their online business directory as a resource.
The resolution from the Board of County Commissioners urges communities across the nation to "Shop Small" not only on November 30 but throughout the year.
