The Morris County Board of County Commissioners has introduced a $35 million capital spending plan for 2025. This plan aims to maintain essential infrastructure supporting education, public safety, and human services programs. The proposal was presented by the Capital Budget Committee, led by Commissioners Tayfun Selen, Deborah Smith, and Stephen H. Shaw, during a public meeting in Morristown.
The total spending plan amounts to $48,585,406 but will be offset by $13,183,294 in various grants. It emphasizes investments in facility upgrades and infrastructure maintenance, including roads and bridges. A significant portion of the budget is allocated to support the construction of a Center for Health Professions at the County College of Morris.
Commissioner Deputy Director Shaw explained that the committee began reviewing proposals months ago from county departments and agencies. "It is a long-standing practice that has enabled us to plan our capital expenditures early each year," he said.
Morris County's responsibilities include maintaining diverse infrastructure beyond administrative buildings. Commissioner Selen highlighted an allocation of $8.58 million for bridge and culvert replacements in Montville, Mount Olive, and Jefferson Township. Additionally, another 20.6 miles of county roads are set for resurfacing next year.
A further $11 million is designated for resurfacing roadways across 11 municipalities in 2025. Since 2016, more than 230 miles of roads have been resurfaced under similar initiatives.
The plan also includes a $4.46 million investment towards constructing an 80,000-square-foot Center for Health Professions at the County College of Morris to enhance educational excellence and workforce development.
Commissioner Smith stated their dedication to strengthening education and enhancing public safety: “These investments will provide vital training and equipment for public safety personnel.”
