The Morris County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recently held its 32nd Partners in Economic Development Awards at the Hyatt Regency Morristown. The event recognized individuals and companies contributing to business growth and economic stability in the region.
The annual awards highlight real estate transactions that attract and retain industry and employers in Morris County, as well as organizations making significant impacts on tourism, community engagement, and economic development. This year's Impact Awards were given to the Workforce Development Board of Northwest NJ, Morris Museum, and Community Builders.
Commissioner Director Tayfun Selen addressed attendees, emphasizing that the newly introduced 2025 budget maintains a flat county tax rate for the sixth consecutive year. He attributed this achievement to Morris County's growing business community. With National County Government Month approaching in April, Selen highlighted various services provided by the county government.
“Everyone in this room plays a role in keeping Morris County’s economy strong," said Director Selen. "Our ratable base gives us the ability to invest in the essential services our residents expect and deserve."
Selen also mentioned some lesser-known functions performed by the county, such as owning three freight rail lines managed by Dover & Rockaway Railroad. These include Chester Branch, High Bridge Branch, and Dover & Rockaway Railroad. Additionally, he noted responsibilities like mosquito control, hazardous waste collection through the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority, and "library-by-mail" services for homebound residents.
“From maintaining freight rail lines to supporting tourism, protecting public health and preserving history, Morris County government plays a role in ways many people don’t realize,” he added.
Director Selen announced an investment of $900,000 in economic development and tourism this year. This includes $100,000 for planning America's 250th Anniversary celebrations in Morris County. The goal is to capitalize on local economic opportunities from these celebrations and New Jersey hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sarah Neibart from the Tourism Bureau stated that “the 250th Anniversary Steering Committee is working closely with community partners to plan events that celebrate our county’s rich and unique history.” She added that many events will be free to the public starting as early as May.
During the EDC event, Samantha Rutledge updated attendees on planning efforts for upcoming anniversary celebrations. The Tourism Bureau plans to launch a website along with social media accounts dedicated to sharing news about these events.
Meghan Hunscher of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce emphasized Morris County's contribution of over $70 billion to the region's economy: “One of the reasons we hold this event is to recognize and thank the real estate brokerage community for their role in attracting businesses that drive economic growth.”
Keynotes at the program included Brady O’Connor from FIFA World Cup 26 NY/NJ Host Committee; Amanda Granito from New York Red Bulls; and Beth Rooney from Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Networking opportunities followed for local business leaders.
