Morris County has announced plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's historic ride on April 18, 1775, with a campaign named "Two If By Sea." The event encourages community participation by shining two lamps, lanterns, or lights in windows from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This initiative pays homage to the pivotal night that marked the beginning of the American Revolution. It was on this occasion that two lanterns were hung in the bell tower of the Old North Church in Boston to signal the advance of British troops by sea. The following day, confrontations between British forces and colonial militia ignited in Lexington and Concord.
The Morris County Board of County Commissioners and the Morris County 250th Anniversary Steering Committee will launch the event by illuminating beacons at the Morris County Courthouse and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown. The congregation of St. Peter’s has lent their support to the celebration, echoing the role played by the Old North Church in 1775.
“‘Two If By Sea,’” reflects Morris County Commissioner Christine Myers, “brings us together to honor the night that changed the course of our nation.” She hopes that communities across Morris County will participate by displaying two lights to commemorate the courage of early American patriots.
Participants are encouraged to share photos on social media using the hashtag #TwoIfBySea and mention @MorrisCountyNJ. Images can also be sent to 250@morriscountyalliance.org for credit.
Commissioner Deputy Director Stephen Shaw highlighted the movement sparked by the two lanterns: “Lighting two lanterns didn’t just warn a town, it activated a movement. It was the first signal in a revolution driven by ordinary citizens standing up for extraordinary ideals.”
The county's official endorsement of the campaign will be formalized through a proclamation. The “Two If By Sea” initiative is part of a series of events celebrating the American Revolution's 250th anniversary, organized by the Morris County Tourism Bureau, County Commissioners, and the 250th Anniversary Steering Committee. The broader observance commenced in September 2024 with the rededication of a replica Revolutionary War cannon.
Additional commemorative events will continue throughout 2025 and 2026.
