Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after voting last night against the far-right’s bill to prioritize guns over public safety:

“House Republicans want to increase access to deadly weapon accessories that make mass shootings easier. They continue to push dangerous policies that threaten public safety.

“Parents like myself worry each day about dropping their kids off at school. Our children are traumatized by lockdowns and active shooter drills. House Republicans even know their position is unpopular with the majority of Americans — it’s why they pulled this bill earlier this year after an arm brace was used to murder nine-year-old children in their Tennessee classroom.

“Yesterday’s vote is a message to parents: guns are more important to the House GOP than your children. I am confident that my Democratic colleagues in the Senate will halt this deadly bill.”

Rep. Sherrill is a former Navy helicopter pilot and former federal prosecutor. She qualified as an expert shot in the rifle and pistol in the U.S. Navy and as a federal prosecutor, she worked to keep illegal guns off the streets of New Jersey. Rep. Sherrill is a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
