Morris County has approved over $1.3 million in grants for trail projects, aiming to enhance public outdoor spaces across seven towns. The funding will support the design and construction of trails in Morristown, Mendham Borough, Morris Plains, Randolph Township, Denville, East Hanover, and Montville.
Commissioner Deputy Director Stephen Shaw emphasized the program's growth: “This program has grown beyond our expectations, providing invaluable recreational spaces and boosting the quality of life for our residents.” He also highlighted the long-term benefits these trails would bring to communities through careful planning and engineering.
Since its inception in 2016, the Morris County Trail Construction Grant Program has allocated 54 grants covering nearly 29 miles of trails. Funded by the Preservation Trust Fund established in 1992 and modified in 2014 to include recreational trail development, the county’s investment now surpasses $6.5 million.
Shaw further commented on the importance of these projects: “The variety and scale of these projects demonstrate how much we value creating accessible and well-maintained outdoor spaces. From short community paths to multi-use greenways, our trail network continues to grow and benefit residents of all ages.”
