Morris County marked Earth Day this year with the planting of Eastern Redbud trees at Central Park in Morris Plains. It was the third year of collaboration between county commissioners, the Atlantic Health System, and the Morris County Shade Tree Division. This event was attended by Commissioner Thomas Mastrangelo, Carolyn Dancy from Atlantic Health, Kris McMorland of the Shade Tree Commission, and Alexandra Cerasiello of U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s office, among others.

“Earth Day reminds us to take meaningful actions, big or small, to preserve and protect our planet. Morris County has a long tradition of protecting the environment, from preserving farmland and open space to maintaining the largest county park system in New Jersey. I’m proud to be part of this legacy,” stated Commissioner Mastrangelo.

The theme for Earth Day 2025 was “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizing the positive impact of collective conservation efforts. The tree planting initiative was previously initiated in 2023 by Dancy in collaboration with the Shade Tree Division. The Atlantic Health Foundation has since been donating trees annually. The first planting was at the Morris County Library, followed by events in Morristown and Parsippany.

The Shade Tree Division prepared the planting area in Central Park by removing old trees and prepping the soil. “Morris County’s continued investment in tree planting reflects our broader commitment to open space, clean air, and public health. Each tree is a step toward a healthier and more resilient environment,” McMorland commented.

Morris County has preserved over 14,750 acres of land since the launch of the Preservation Trust Fund in 1994, with more than $300 million awarded in grants to local municipalities.

In addition to the tree planting, Atlantic Health System hosted two public paper shredding events, further emphasizing sustainability and public health.
